Hi Alvin,

The shortest known 3^4 checkerboard takes 24 moves. See this post

which has a link to a log file you can use to study the moves. There are other
possibilities <http://www.gravitation3d.com/mc4d/checkerboards/> for
checkerboard patterns too!
